As the baby boomer generation had aged, the demand for qualified healthcare providers has compounded. The result has been a boom in healthcare jobs as well as those interested in the field of healthcare. Colleges that offer online degrees have noted this phenomenon with the high enrollment numbers in their online healthcare programs. According to USPRwire:

With the continuing shortage of qualified professionals in the news, health care programs remain at the top of the list for students seeking an online education. The government estimates that medical careers will continue to mushroom in popularity for decades in order to fill a very real need.

Stan Banks, president of Virginia College Online, notes, “We offer two-year associate degrees in some of the most important medical careers. For instance, Healthcare Reimbursement can lead to a medical career with an HMO, insurance company, hospital or doctor’s office. Medical insurance paperwork has become more and more complex over the years, and specialists are always needed who understand the system.Health Services Management is a bachelor’s degree program for those who are already working in the field and who would like to move into management.”

Unfortunately, just like in every other business, there are colleges out there that begin with one goal in mind: offer a mediocre education and charge high fees. These “diploma mills” will give you a diploma, for a heavy fee, and confirm your diploma with potential employers. However, the learning you’ll receive will be sup-par at best, and you may find that you’re horribly unprepared to enter the workforce in your field.

In order to avoid diploma mills, consider this advice from CNNMoney.com:

Experts and program administrators at some of the most well-known and largest online programs say you should check to make sure a school is properly accredited. That means credits can be transferred fairly easily between most major higher-education systems.

One way of double checking a college’s claim is by contacting a well-known university in your area to see if they accept credits from the online degree program in question, says Warren Ashley, a distance learning program director at California State University Dominguez Hills in Los Angeles.

Another red flag he warns about is a college offering to trade “life experience” for classroom credits. Although that’s a common practice for gaining acceptance into graduate schools, Ashley says such swaps aren’t generally counted as substitutes for credits at accredited universities.

“People need to make sure no expensive preconditions exist in the online program they’re considering,” Ashley added. “Some traditional schools just don’t believe in earning a degree completely online. They’ll require you to take at least a class or two on campus.”

Another good way of deciphering whether or not a school is reputable is simply to enter the name of the school in a search engine and see what other students (current and former) are saying in chat rooms and message boards. In general, if an institution is trying to simply sucker you out of money, people are going to do their best to warn others.

Filling out an online college application is not so much different than filling out an application for a traditional college. You’ll need to include basic information such as your name, phone number, address, social security number, etc. You’ll also need to include the names and addresses of any other postsecondary schools you’re earned credits in as well as the name and address of your high school. Depending on your age, you may even need to offer some information about your parents.

You’ll need to obtain a copy of your high school diploma and transcripts or GED scores in most cases, though some career diploma schools don’t always require that their students be high school graduates. In some cases, you’ll need to send a copy of your high school writing portfolio. You’ll also need to send transcripts of the work you completed at any other college, even if it was just one college class you took while you were still in high school.

Some online college applications require that you submit an essay along with you application materials, though this is rare for a continuing education college. For financial aid purposes, you’ll probably have to fill out a FAFSA as well as any supporting documents that the college will need in order to process your financial aid awards. Some students may be required to send in copies of their tax returns for review by the financial aid committee.

Some online colleges may also require that a student complete an entrance exam. Sometimes these exams are simply meant to assist the college in placing you in general education courses that are appropriate to your level of education, and sometimes they’re meant to determine if a student is educated enough to attend a college. Colleges that have a limited number of student slots available may use low placement test scores as an excuse to not accept a student into their program. These placement tests generally occur over the Internet and have a time limit.

While most of the forms you’ll need can be found and filed on the school’s website, you should plan to have to submit additional materials by postal mail. Make sure to read the application information section carefully on each of the websites of the schools that you are applying for because each will have different requirements.

Browse Online Degrees and Colleges.

With the increasing globalization and connectivity between different parts of the world, the number of students migrating from one country to another for higher studies has also increased significantly. Every year thousands of students migrate from one country to another (usually from the developing to developed nations) to study in various universities.

Going abroad for studying isn’t easy. If you have any doubts, ask that student who’s planning to do it. There are just so many things to take care of. After all, you aren’t going to the school next door, you are leaving your country. The “things to do before leaving” list for such students is huge.

This article lists the most important checklist points which every student should take care of before he leaves to study abroad. If you are a student, you should bookmark or print this out immediately.

1. Check The Documents

Documents like your visa, passport, driver’s license are the most important part of your luggage. Make sure you’ve got all the relevant identity and college related documents in place. This could include the following.

Passport

Visa

Course approval forms / Letter of acceptance from the university

Test results like those of TOEFL etc

Student cards and other identity cards

Medical and health related documents

Insurance

Flight tickets

So make sure you’ve got all the above documents in place before you board your flight.

2. Accommodation

Don’t ignore the task of finding accommodation and don’t assume that you can easily get it once you reach there. It’s a new land and the hostel rules/accommodation rules might be different. Make sure you contact the college authorities to see if there are on-campus hostels and whether space is available for you.

Also get in touch with the student community and Youth Hostel Association for the same.

3. Money

It’s all about the money, honey. So get your finances in order. Check the following before leaving.

Does your credit card work in that country? Will be you be charged an extra interest if you use it there? Contact the bank to research these things.

Does your bank have a branch in that city? How would you take out cash there?

What is the currency exchange process?

What are traveler’s checks and how you could make use of them?

Get answers to all the above questions before you leave.

4. Health and Medicine

This is very important but ignored by a majority of students. Make sure you know the rules of health insurance in that place and also whether your health insurance works there. Take a first-aid box along with you which has all the important medicines.

If you take some kind of medicine regularly due to certain illness, make sure you buy that in bulk and also inquire regarding its availability at medicine stores in that city.

5. Other insurances

Health insurance has been covered in the aforementioned point. Now what about life insurance and any other such insurance policies. Do they work in that country? Get that information.

6. Visa Policies

It’s very important to be aware of the visa policies and what kind of freedom does your student visa grant you. It’s also important to keep your visa in a safe place because that’s your permit to live in that country for a particular period of time.

7. Location Map

Don’t just keep dreaming about the place and its environment. This is the information age. You’ve got tools like Google Maps and Google Earth. Plus there is the awesome Google Street View. Use them to get location details of your college.

Also, you could use Google Maps to get an idea about the roads and landmarks in the city. It’ll help.

8. Do Some Social Networking

It is time to use Facebook and MySpace to get some useful stuff done. Use these and other prominent social networks to find students in the city and your college. Contact them, make friends and interact with them. They are the ones who would help you if you get into a problem there. So start making relationships before you land in their country.

9. Check Student Community

Many colleges and universities have a vibrant and active student community who are there to take care of the grievances and needs of students. They also help new students in resolving issues and getting things done.

Check if your college has such a community and if they maintain a website. If they do, you can check it out and also contact the student President regarding any queries you might have.

10. Culture Knowledge

“When in Rome, do as Romans do” is easier said than done. It is difficult to adapt and get used to new traditions and customs. So, to prevent a culture shock, make sure you do a good bit of research into the culture of that country and to what extent it is different from yours.

11. Cuisine Knowledge

Unless you come from a country that has similar culture and eating habits, food could be a major concern. The best way to battle that is to acquire as much knowledge as you can about the different cuisines available.

Although nowadays you can find all kinds of food in each part of the world, it’s good to know what you’ll usually get for breakfast and lunch in college, and if you can’t have it then what could be the alternatives to that.

12. Youth Hostel Card

I talked about Youth Hostel Association in a point above. Many countries have their own such associations that help students with accommodation and other necessary stuff. It’s good to get acquainted with such organizations, join them and get an i-card for the same.

13. Emergency Contact Information

No matter how responsible you think you are, don’t forget that you are leaving your homeland and going to a different destination altogether. If some unfortunate incident happens with you, people should know who to call for help.

Make sure you provide your emergency contact information to college authorities, hostel authorities and to friends with whom you’ll stay. Also carry it in your wallet if possible.

14. Latest News

It’ll be good if you can go through the latest happenings in that country and learn a bit about the political situation there, sports, films, etc. It doesn’t harm if you know beforehand which team won the super bowl last month (if you are going to the US that is).

15. Check Airline Luggage

Do you know that different airlines have different limits on the total weight of the luggage you can carry. If it exceeds the limit, you may be asked to pay a fee or you may not be allowed to take that extra stuff. So it is better to know it beforehand. Here is a great site called Luggage Limits that’ll help you with the same.

16. Learn About Saving Costs

Frugality is what a student life could be associated with. And that’s what you need to learn too. Saving costs would always help and let you have the extra cash in your pocket. Think about the different ways you could do it. One example – use Skype to call friends and family from home instead of using the phone.

17. Start Learning the Language

The idea here is to not try and become the expert in the language. Just try and learn the important words and their pronunciation. Like, if you are in France, it’ll always help if you know how to say, “Which way is this place” in French.

18. Shop for Clothes & Other Useful Stuff

Yeah, this is the good part of the process. Shopping for things you’ll need and things you think you’ll need. Well, it’s a big occasion so go for it. Plus you don’t know how much things might cost there so good to buy some stuff and then leave

19. Get Advice

Get advice from family, elders, friends and people who have stayed in that country where you are going. While you can learn and make yourself aware of a lot of things by researching on the internet, only the person who has stayed there can give you insight into living a life there.

20. Be Happy & Cheerful

It’s a lot of work. Schedules, things to do, things to buy, people to meet, people to talk, etc. Don’t let the stress take over. Do everything with a positive frame of mind. It’s a new journey of life and you’re going to have a lot of fun too. Leave the country with a smile and land in the foreign land in a great, adventuresome mood.

Because online education is a relatively new institution, there has been some question as to whether or not the GI Bill, a military institution begun in 1944, would apply. The answer: It does. Considered an IHL or institute of higher learning, many online education programs are covered under the GI Bill, including non-degree programs like HVAC or other vocational certifications. According to the U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs:

The GI Bill is available for attendance at IHLs such as:

Four Year Universities

Community Colleges

Advanced Degrees

Payment is based on the number of classes you attend:

12 hours or more – fulltime

9 – 11 hours – ¾ time

6 – 8 hours – ½ time

less than 6 hours – reimbursed at a rate not to exceed the tuition & fees charged for the course(s).

For graduate level training, the training time is determined by the college – for example, if a 2 hour class is considered full time in a graduate program at your school, the VA will pay you the full time rate.

The GI Bill will allow you to attend more than one college at a time, as long as the classes at both institutions count towards your degree, and the school granting your degree accepts the classes at the second school as part of your requirements. However, the GI Bill will not pay you to take the same classes twice unless you receive a failing grade in a class that is a graduation requirement.

The GI Bill can pay you for more than one degree, for example: it will pay you for a degree in Business and then for a second degree in Computer Science, or for an AA, BA, MA in the same field. Once you have a degree, you could pursue another one provided you have remaining entitlement on your GI Bill. If you are enlisted, you may be eligible for GI Bill benefits for your education.

While tuition costs are the number one concern of MBA-seekers, there are a lot of other costs that students must plan for when considering enrolling in an MBA program. Cost of living, textbooks, and software costs are just some of the other expenses of students in an MBA program. Students who are not going to work need to know all of the possible funding sources available to them. Consider these sources listed at MBAMap.com:

MBA Loans

There are a number of loan programs available to MBAs. Check to see if you are eligible for government-subsidized loans. Also, the GMAC has started the MBA LOANS program.

Scholarships

MBA programs have scholarship monies available for applicants fitting particular profiles.

Employers

Sometimes employers can be convinced to help support the costs of MBA programs. You may be required to work for a certain number of years for the employer after graduating in order to repay their assistance.

Savings

Many students fund part of their MBA education out of their personal savings.

Tax Breaks

Some of the money you spend on your education may qualify you for tax breaks.

Grants

A number of organizations provide grant money for students. There are a number of grant directories available in print and on the Internet.

Students who are interested in finding funding for their graduate education should start by contacting their school’s financial aid office. They should be able to give you some idea of where to start on your search for funding options.

Many students that are considering pursuing an MBA ask themselves this question prior to enrolling in graduate school: is the cost of an MBA worth the end-result? In part, the answer depends on how hard you work, what type of program you enroll in, and the state of the economy upon your graduation. However, many studies show that MBA graduates earn significantly more than their non-MBA holding business professionals. Consider this advice from Hobsons’ MBA Central:

At a time of global economic uncertainty, MBAs from the best schools are the most attractive to employers. During a boom, almost any MBA is employable.

As for earnings, most full-time MBAs who pay their own way and attend a good school can reasonably expect to recover their fees, subsistence and lost salary from their enhanced earnings in under four years on a one-year full-time MBA, and an average of five or six years on a two-year program.

Three years after earning an MBA from a top school, graduates can earn three times their pre-MBA salary. Even an ‘average’ MBA will earn an immediate 40% extra.

In a recent report by Forbes Magazine, business professionals who had graduated from some of the nation’s top universities reported that their salaries had nearly tripled within five years of graduating from their MBA program. With results like the, the answer to the question of whether or not an MBA is a good investment is a resounding yes.

A scholarship is a form of financial aid that is awarded to a student based on certain qualities such as financial need, educational merit, involvement in community service, or membership in a certain group. However, each scholarship will have its own specific requirements. Scholarships vary in amount and do not have to be repaid. Often, students are required to submit certain things in order to be considered for a scholarship, including an application, FAFSA results, and an essay.

There are literally hundreds of thousands of scholarships out there, and many go unused year after year. This is because finding a scholarship requires a significant amount of time and research. This is true for online college scholarships as well as traditional college scholarships. Often, a student’s school will have a list of scholarships that are school or area specific, but these scholarships are generally difficult to obtain because of the school wide competition for such a limited number of scholarships.

However, there are many ways to find online college scholarships. First, students should check with their online school and find out if the financial aid department has a list of scholarships that are awarded solely to students of that school. This is a good way to investigate available scholarships because students know that they already meet one of the scholarship’s requirements. However, if you cannot find or receive a scholarship through this means, you’ll need to venture out into your community and the Internet.

Many websites offer scholarship databases where students simply fill out a few pages about themselves, their parents, and their program of study and career goals. The website will then compare their answers to the requirements of all of the scholarships in their database and display the scholarships that the student qualifies for. Generally, the same scholarships that are available to campus-based students will be available to online students. It’s best to check the organization’s website when you find a scholarship you’re interested in so that you get the most recent information.

Other places to find online college scholarships include through your employer, through individuals or organizations in your community, through your parent’s employer, or through any clubs or groups that you or your parents belong to. It may require a lot of work, but it will be worth it in the end when your online education is free.

If you are currently working and don’t have time to go back to school, a online school may be the right vehicle to get you going. This degree offers you flexibility to continue working, while going to school on your own time, at your own discretion. Once you complete a business degree online, you may be able to write your own ticket into that management position you’ve been wanting.

There are many types of online business degrees to choose from, as well as a large number of online colleges that offer accredited degrees. If you are an undergraduate student, you would be seeking an online Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA). This type of business degree can help you move forward in the career field of your choice, or perhaps even move into a new field altogether. For example, a few of the areas of concentration that are offered at many online colleges are accounting, finance, marketing, or even small business management and entrepreneurship.

For those students who want to add to their bachelor’s degree with an MBA, the field is wide open. Many online colleges offer MBAs in several specialties, like International Relations, Human Resources, or Forensic Accounting. It’s just a matter of finding the right accredited online college that offers the program that will help you follow and develop your special area of interest.

Of course, some may wonder whether or not the online masters degrees is as good as a degree at a traditional college or university. The answer is a resounding “yes!” In fact, many brick and mortar universities now offer online degrees in several areas, including business degrees. Accredited online colleges adhere to the rigorous standards that are defined by the agency that accredits them. The work is often rigorous and challenging, offering students a chance to hone valuable business skills.

A distance degree can help you to deal with real-world business issues that you may already be challenged with at work, such as management issues, effective communication skills, or human resources management. As you learn new skills, you can apply them to your present job, or bring them with you when you get that big promotion. A large part of most BBA or MBA programs is learning to create business presentations that are effective and timely, as well as written critical analysis of current business practices.

You may already be involved in a business setting that deals with people or entities across the globe. Communication and distance issues may be two of the biggest challenges facing the global economy today. With knowledge learned from your business degree, you can help facilitate eradicating problems that may occur in global business transactions.

Online colleges utilize the latest in technology to create enriching programs that enhance the learning experience. Video conferencing, online discussions, and coursework that must be researched and reported online are all technologies that have been adapted by the business world and used on a daily basis. Simply by enrolling in an online degree program, new business technologies are being practiced to complete the coursework for an online degree.

The sheer diversity of the online courses online available lends itself to creating a career path that is as unique as you are. Accessibility and flexibility are intrinsic to a business degree from an online college. Global business, accounting, entrepreneurship, or management careers are just a click away with a degree in business.

Getting university degrees at home has taken the world by storm. Previously, the only way to get a university degree was by actually handling classes on campus, and little by little, getting your diploma. The Internet boom has caused a revolution in academics by the name of online education or distance learning. Currently, nearly 75% of well-known colleges and universities offer online degree programs on various topics that have evolved over time, to the point that there is no difference between the experience of online education and traditional education.

There is a lot of propaganda against online courses. They are often labeled as “factories” of fake diplomas or other dramatic and unethical things. The fact is that most online schools are just that: schools. Some are properly accredited. Some are for the strengthening of general knowledge. The fact is that consumers are generally aware of the status of their schools online. Any school site fraudulently advertising itself as accredited when it is not, will probably get into lots of legal trouble when found out.

In a program of online study, students receive the same curriculum, writing projects, may also interact with their tutors and fellows of virtual classroom, and eventually take the same exam to complete the program and obtain a degree online.

Students who aspire to obtain a college degree online at home tend to be more responsible, self-motivated and independent students. They also often carry with them life experiences and knowledge they have built along the road.

Unlike traditional “correspondence schools” making false statements, online schools do not have such consequences. They will not promise you a million dollar salary to make a program for six weeks. They will teach you a new skill you can use any way you choose.

Students engage in learning activities online which they collaborate with each other, engage in debate and discussion through postings, research websites, and completing projects that are relevant to their own jobs and departments. Students must be held accountable for compliance with all requirements of the program.

Perhaps the biggest advantage to attract people online is the lack of transportation needs. You can attend a class that is hundreds or thousands of miles away and never miss a lesson.

Online classes can be a vital part of your education. If you are interested in returning to college, classes online can provide a flexible environment where you can see how easy the training is. Programs of Distance Education are available at different levels of degrees online. Students who wish to obtain university degrees online are turning to institutions in the hope that the learning process is not time or preload.

Online education is not for everyone though. If you want to know if online schooling is for you and ensure the success of your online training or university degree at home, you’ll have to answer that question for yourself. University degrees online come in all shapes and sizes. Many teens and young adults do not want to move out of state just to get a degree in their field of interest.
